Greece: At least 26 people have died after a passenger train collided with an oncoming cargo train in Greece on Tuesday night. More than 85 people have been injured in this accident, who are being taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Several train coaches got derailed and at least three caught fire after the crash which took place in Tempe, said a report by new agency. Local media reports said said “tens of people” were injured while the fire brigade said that the fire has been put out, adding that “some passengers” were pulled from the wreckage unconscious.

Videos shared widely on social media showed derailed carriages, badly damaged with broken windows and smoke while rescue workers attempted to look for trapped passengers. “The evacuation process is ongoing and is being carried out under very difficult conditions due to the severity of the collision between the two trains,” Fire Service spokesman Vassilis Varthakoyiannis said.

According to Greek media, the accident happened late at night. At present, it is not clear whose fault the accident was. The governor of Greece’s Thessaly region said that a passenger train was going from Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki, while another freight train was coming from Thessaloniki to Larissa. Both these trains collided before Larissa city.

People present at the time of the accident also helped the rescue team to save the people. Soon after the incident, several vehicles of the fire department had reached the spot.
