The Congress party has taken the decision to expel senior leader Sanjay Nirupam from Maharashtra for a period of six years due to his alleged ‘indiscipline’ and ‘anti-party statements’. This move came after Nirupam criticized the state party leadership during discussions about seat-sharing with the Shiv Sena (UBT) for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Sanjay Nirupam, a former MP and prominent figure in Maharashtra’s political landscape, faced expulsion from the Congress party following his recent remarks against INDIA ally, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), regarding seat-sharing arrangements for the upcoming Lok Sabha election.
The Maharashtra unit of the Congress party passed a resolution seeking Nirupam’s expulsion during a meeting in Mumbai, subsequently sending the proposal to the party’s high command in Delhi. His expulsion was approved by Congress president Sonia Gandhi and announced by Congress general secretary KC Venugopal.
Reacting to the news of his expulsion, Nirupam took a sarcastic jibe at the party, suggesting they focus their efforts elsewhere. “Congress Party should not waste much energy and stationery for me. Instead, use your remaining energy and stationery to save the party,” he remarked.
Sanjay Nirupam is expected to announce his decision to leave the Congress party at a press conference on Thursday morning. Displeased with the party’s decision-making process and its failure to address his concerns, Nirupam hinted at exploring other options. He expressed dissatisfaction with the Shiv Sena’s candidate selection for the Mumbai North-West constituency, urging the Congress to re-evaluate its alliance with the Uddhav group.
Nirupam has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the Congress’s handling of key issues, particularly in Maharashtra. His discontent stems from what he perceives as arbitrary decisions made by the party leadership, notably regarding seat allocations in Mumbai and Sangli.
Expressing his frustration over the Shiv Sena’s nomination process, Nirupam emphasized that he is ‘open to all options’ and will make a decision within a week.
