Ex-Rajasthan MLA Mewaram Jain, booked in gang-rape, suspended after obscene video goes viral

Rajasthan: After two viral video clips surfaced on social media, which allegedly showed former Barmer MLA Mevaram Jain doing obscene acts, the Congress party suspended him from its membership. The move comes in the backdrop of Jain facing charges in a gang rape case, adding complexity to a larger web of allegations related to sexual exploitation, sextortion, blackmailing and money laundering.

Congress said that the act of Jain was an indication of a breach of discipline of the party.

Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra, in a press release on Saturday (January 6), said, “Mewaram Jain (Ex MLA, Barmer) has been suspended from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress with immediate effect in view of his involvement in immoral activities which is a clear indication of a breach of discipline under the constitution of the Congress Party.”

In the light of the viral video clips, the BJP launched a scathing attack on the previous Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government. Union Minister Kailash Choudhary remarked that under the previous administration the protectors have become the eaters, leading to the state being hailed as a leader in atrocities against women.

What was the matter
A woman filed a case in December 2023, accusing nine people including Jain and RPS officer Anand Singh Rajpurohit, of raping and molesting her adolescent daughter two years ago.

Mewaram Jain was elected from the Barmer constituency on a Congress ticket three times. 70-Year-old, however, lost the last election to BJP rebel Priyanka Choudhary. He has also held the post of chairman of the Gau Seva Ayog. Some explicit pictures/CD of Jain had surfaced over a year back, which he had claimed to be doctored, and filed a case at the Kotwali Police Station in Barmer.

The zonal unit of the Enforcement Directorate, Jaipur, has registered a case of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with this case after it was learnt that an exchange of Rs 5 crore had allegedly taken place in this case.
