Gujarat University Orders Foreign Students to Leave Hostel Following Namaz Controversy

A disturbing incident unfolded at Gujarat University, where a group of individuals protested and shouted religious slogans against foreign students offering namaz outside their hostel rooms. This event, which occurred on the night of March 16 during the holy month of Ramadan, led to a violent attack on the students.

Decision to Vacate Hostel

In response to the escalating tension, the university has now instructed six students from Afghanistan and one from East Africa to vacate their hostel rooms. The Vice-Chancellor, Neerja Gupta, clarified that these students had completed their studies and were staying in the hostel due to pending administrative matters.

Arrangements for Return

“We have completed the required paperwork and they can now safely return to their native countries,” stated Vice-Chancellor Gupta. She emphasized that the university aims to ensure former students do not stay in the hostel, making arrangements for their return home. The respective consulates have also been informed of this decision.

Safety Concerns Addressed

The incident prompted concerns about the safety of international students. Representatives from Afghanistan and Gambia visited the university to discuss these issues with the administration. The university administration has assured that steps are being taken to maintain the safety and well-being of the international student community, which includes over 300 students.

Police Action

In the wake of the attack, the police have taken action. An FIR was registered against 20-25 unidentified individuals under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including rioting and causing hurt. Two arrests have been made, with the authorities actively pursuing further suspects.

The violence resulted in two students from Sri Lanka and Tajikistan being hospitalized. This unfortunate incident has sparked conversations about religious tolerance and the safety of foreign students studying in India.
