HP: Total 14 roads closed for vehicular traffic following heavy snowfall

About 500 vehicles collided near the northern portal of the Atal Tunnel at Rohtang Pass in Manali following heavy snowfall. While more than 300 affected vehicles have been moved to a safer area.

Shimla: A total of 14 roads, including two national highways, have been closed for vehicular traffic following heavy snowfall in various parts of Himachal Pradesh. Heavy snowfall and rains in the state have broken the records of the last three decades. Because of which the tourists including the local people are facing a lot of problems.

The roads that were closed after the snowfall include the north portal of Atal Tunnel to Darcha (National Highway 3), Darcha to Shinkula to Zanksar, Koksar to Losar (National Highway 5) and Tandi to Kadhu Nala. Of the 14 roads closed, six are in Lahaul and Spiti district, four in Kullu and the rest in other parts of the state, according to the Emergency Operation Centre.

Around 500 vehicles collided near the northern portal of the Atal Tunnel at Rohtang Pass in Manali following heavy snowfall. While over 300 affected vehicles have been moved to a safer area, the rest are still plying in the icy terrain. They will also be taken till late night. Police are monitoring the rescue operation and have advised passengers not to apply brakes and drive slowly in first gear to avoid skidding.

According to the Meteorological Department, Gondla and Keylong received 9.2 and 4 cm of snow, respectively, while Lahaul Spiti and some other places received 5 to 10 cm of snow, making roads slippery. After heavy snowfall, the apple crop has suffered heavy losses. Sowing has also been affected in Lahul. After April 20, continuous snowfall and rain is continuing in Manali valley including Lahul valley.
