In a notable achievement for India, Jagjit Pavadia has been re-elected to the Vienna-based International Narcotics Control Board (INCB). This victory underscores India’s significant presence in the global fight against narcotics.

Dominating the Election

Jagjit Pavadia’s re-election to the INCB marks a triumph in a fiercely contested UN election. With India securing 41 out of 53 votes from the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Pavadia emerged as the clear winner, clinching the highest number of votes among all elected member states. The competitive nature of the election, featuring 24 candidates vying for five seats, highlights the significance of India’s resounding victory.

Acknowledgment and Appreciation

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar commended India’s success, emphasizing Pavadia’s re-election as a testament to her exemplary work. Jaishankar lauded the efforts of the Permanent Mission of India to the UN and the Ministry of External Affairs in securing this achievement, acknowledging their dedication and strategic approach.

Pavadia’s Remarkable Contributions

Jagjit Pavadia, who has been a member of the INCB since 2015, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her role. Serving as President of the Board from 2021 to 2022, Pavadia has demonstrated leadership and dedication in advancing the objectives of international drug control. Her extensive background in the Indian Revenue Service, including pivotal roles such as Narcotics Commissioner of India, reflects her deep commitment to combating drug trafficking and abuse.

The Role of INCB

Established in 1968, the INCB plays a crucial role as an independent and quasi-judicial monitoring body for enforcing United Nations international drug control conventions. Comprising 13 members elected by the ECOSOC, the INCB operates in their personal capacity, prioritizing the global fight against drug-related challenges.

Jagjit Pavadia’s re-election to the INCB reaffirms India’s steadfast commitment to international drug control efforts and underscores the nation’s proactive stance in combating the menace of narcotics on the global stage.
