Magisterial Probe Initiated Following ‘Accidental’ Police Station Firing

In response to an incident involving an alleged accidental firing at a police station resulting in a woman sustaining a gunshot wound to the head, the Aligarh district magistrate has initiated a magisterial probe.
District magistrate Indra Vikram Singh explained that the decision to conduct a magisterial inquiry was made to ensure transparency in the investigation. Aligarh senior superintendent of police (SSP) Kalanidhi Naithani had submitted a report recommending a magistrate probe into the matter.

The government communique detailed that Ishrat Nigar, a resident of Haddi Godam Chauraha in Aligarh, was injured by gunfire from the pistol of sub-inspector Manoj Kumar Sharma. A case under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at Kotwali police station in Aligarh.

Aligarh city magistrate Ram Shankar has been tasked with submitting a comprehensive enquiry report within one week to the district magistrate’s office.

The accused sub-inspector, Manoj Kumar Sharma, in charge of Bhujpura outpost in Aligarh, was suspended on Friday. Authorities stated that prima facie evidence suggested accidental firing, but a thorough investigation would be conducted, and appropriate action taken against the officer for negligence.
