Manipur: Heavy vehicles barred on key bridge after a bomb explosion

Manipur: The movement of heavy vehicles between Sapermina and Kobru Laikha on National Highway-2 linking Manipur with Nagaland has been suspended by Manipur government. The move came after a key bridge was damaged in a bomb blast.

Kangpokpi District Magistrate said the decision was taken to prevent possible accidents and ensure public safety. The bridge was damaged in a powerful IED blast on Wednesday, leaving over 150 trucks carrying essential commodities to the state capital Imphal stranded in Senapati district.

The Manipur government order said,“It is hereby order that there will be complete stoppage of all kind of heavy vehicular traffic on the minor bridge in Sapermeina at existing Ch.287-370 of NH-39 (New NH-02) between Sapermeina and Koubru Laikha with immediate effect, till further orders, in order to avoid any untoward incident and to ensure safety of the general public/ commuters.”

The order added that unloaded light commercial vehicles and light passenger vehicles can pass through the bridge under strict regulations. District authorities asked the Kangpokpi superintendent of police to regulate traffic from Sapermina to Kobru Laikha till work on an alternate route was completed.

The blast created three craters in the middle of the bridge on the highway, which links landlocked Manipur and its capital Imphal with Dimapur in Nagaland, and is a major lifeline of the state hit by ethnic violence. Security personnel have cordoned off the bridge and investigation into the IED blast has been launched.
