Kunal Kapur, a familiar face from MasterChef India, has been granted divorce by the Delhi High Court on the basis of the cruelty inflicted upon him by his estranged wife. The court’s decision came after Kapur’s appeal challenging a family court’s denial of his divorce plea.
The High Court highlighted the woman’s conduct towards Kapur as “devoid of dignity and empathy.” The judges noted that making reckless, defamatory, and unsubstantiated allegations against a spouse in public amounts to cruelty. The court’s bench, comprising Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Neena Bansal Krishna, stated that such behavior tarnishes the essence of marriage, leaving no reason for Kapur to endure the agony of the relationship.
Kapur and his wife tied the knot in April 2008 and welcomed their first child, a son, in 2012. In his plea, Kapur accused his wife of disrespecting his parents and subjecting him to humiliation. Conversely, the wife refuted these claims, alleging that Kapur fabricated stories to obtain a divorce and insisted that she always attempted to maintain communication with him as a loving spouse.
While acknowledging that conflicts are natural in every marriage, the court emphasized that when such conflicts escalate to disrespect and inconsideration towards a spouse, the sanctity of the marriage is compromised. The bench also noted Kapur’s achievements as a celebrity chef within two years of marriage, attributing it to his hard work and determination. The court deemed the wife’s allegations as attempts to tarnish Kapur’s reputation, which in turn, amounted to cruelty.
