Orange alert in Gujarat amid heavy downpour; Waterlogging in various parts of Junagadh, Navsari

Heavy rains continue in South Gujarat and Saurashtra, Navsari and Junagadh cities worst affected. After causing devastation in many states of North India, now life has become distorted in Central and West India due to the storm.

New Delhi: Heavy downpour wreaked havoc in parts of Gujarat. Navsari taluka of the state’s Navsari district received 303 mm of rain in the last eight hours till 4 pm, while Jalalpore taluka received 276 mm of rain. Due to heavy rains in many districts of southern part of Gujarat and Saurashtra region, the water level in dams and rivers reached the danger mark and a flood-like situation arose in urban areas and some villages.

In Junagadh, many cars and cattle were washed away in the strong current of water. The city received 219 mm of rain in the last eight hours till 4 pm on Saturday. Meanwhile, people were seen walking in waist-deep water to reach safe places. Volunteers helped to save some of them from the strong current of water.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) have issued a joint warning to fishermen residing along the coast of Gujarat, urging them to avoid venturing into the sea from July 22 to July 26. Additionally, The India Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains in the districts of South Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch till Sunday morning. The department has advised fishermen not to go for sea fishing in the coastal areas of North Gujarat from July 22 to July 26.

NDRF teams have been deployed for relief and rescue operations in many areas. Regarding the heavy rains in Gujarat, Union Home Minister Amit Shah took stock of the situation after talking to the Chief Minister of the state, Bhupendra Patel. Amit Shah is constantly in touch with the officials of Gujarat.

Navsari and Junagadh districts have been most affected by the rains. Due to the rain, many residential areas and markets have been waterlogged.

The administration has requested people to take precautions and appealed to them to contact the control room in case of any untoward incident or emergency. People have been warned not to go to the dams or their surrounding areas. Rescue teams have been deployed to evacuate people from low-lying areas to safer places.

Heavy rains lashed Navsari district in South Gujarat and normal life in urban and rural areas was thrown out of gear due to floods. An official said that in Navsari, a man and his son were swept away in a swollen nullah. The person has been rescued and efforts are on to trace his son.

Additional District Magistrate Ketan Joshi said that due to more than 200 mm of rain in just a few hours on Saturday morning, there was waterlogging in the streets and low-lying areas. He told that this led to traffic jam in the city and the situation was handled with coordinated efforts. Officials said that due to the flood, there was a traffic jam on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway near Navsari.

The State Emergency Operation Center said that Devbhoomi Dwarka, Bhavnagar, Bharuch, Surat, Tapi, Valsad and Amreli are other districts which received heavy rains on Saturday.
