Chennai: In the early hours of December 31, 2023, two women and a child from Uttar Pradesh lost their lives in a tragic accident near Keezha Vallanadu Shooting Range in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu. The horrific incident occurred when a tourist van carrying 18 passengers collided with a tipper lorry on the Tirunelveli-Thoothukudi four-lane track.
The collision reportedly occurred due to the lorry entering the wrong side of the road, resulting in the instant loss of life of two women in front of the van. One of the people traveling in the van, a one-year-old girl, also died on the way to the hospital. The remaining fourteen persons who bore the brunt of the collision were immediately shifted to Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital for medical treatment.
The group of around 30 people from Saranpur district of Uttar Pradesh had come to Rameshwaram by train on December 27 and were on their way to various tourist places. Their trip goes awry when their van gets into a fatal accident.
After the accident, Murappanadu police immediately took action and arrested the lorry driver from the spot. Further investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident has been launched, with an emphasis on understanding the reasons behind the lorry entering the wrong side of the road.
