UP Congress Chief Ajay Rai Faces Charges of ‘Promoting Enmity’

Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai is facing an FIR following a complaint filed by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for allegedly promoting enmity, according to the police on Saturday.

The complaint lodged by an ABVP representative accused Rai of implicating ABVP members in an alleged molestation incident at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus. In response to this complaint, an FIR has been registered against the Congress leader under section 505(2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which pertains to statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred, or ill-will between classes. The FIR was lodged at the Lanka police station on Friday night, as confirmed by Inspector (crime) Sahjanand Srivastav.

Rai, in response, regarded the complaint as a manifestation of ABVP’s anxiety, which is the students’ wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He stated, “This shows their nervousness. A probe in the matter will reveal who is involved in it (the molestation incident). The BHU has become a den of ABVP (members) who harbour outsiders.”

The alleged molestation incident occurred on Wednesday night. According to the complainant, she had ventured out of her hostel with a friend when three men on a motorcycle forcibly took her to a secluded area, separated her from her friend near the Karman Baba temple, and gagged her. Subsequently, the accused allegedly disrobed the woman, recorded a video, and took photos of her. After approximately 15 minutes, they released her while noting her phone number,as indicated in the complaint.

Based on the woman’s complaint, an FIR has been registered under section 354 of the IPC, relating to assault or criminal force with intent to outrage a woman’s modesty, and under provisions of the Information Technology Act at the Lanka police station. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the case .
