Uttar Pradesh: Car robber killed in gunfire with encounter with police in Meerut

Uttar Pradesh: On Sunday, an officer said that a car robber died of bullet wounds sustained in an encounter with police on Saturday. During a robbery bid on January 22, the deceased was accused of shooting at a sub-inspector. The officials said, Vinay Kumar had made his escape opening gunfire at police on January 22, wounding sub inspector Munesh Kumar.

Rohit Singh Sajwan, Meerut Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) said Kumar died during treatment late Saturday evening after being shot in retaliation in a police encounter. Police foiled an attempt to carjack an area under Kankarkheda police station on the night of January 22.

Since the vehicle was equipped with GPS, the police managed to locate the robbers and started chasing them. The officer said that when the car thieves gave chase, they opened fire on the police and shot police station in-charge Munesh Kumar in the chest.

He was admitted to the hospital and is recovering from his injuries. The SSP said that with the help of CCTV cameras, the police identified the robbers as Vinay Verma, Anuj and Naresh Sagar.

On Saturday evening, he said that Vinay Verma and Naresh Sagar were arrested while they were planning to flee to Agra by bus. During interrogation, Verma confessed that it was he who had fired at the police.

The SSP said that he was taken to the place where he had hidden the weapon used in the incident. According to the officer, while at the scene, Verma again tried to escape from police custody and shot a constable in his arm.

He said that the police in retaliation surrounded Verma and opened fire on him. He added,”More than six cases of attempt to murder, dacoity, gangster act and theft are registered against Verma in various police stations of the district.”
