Uttarakhand: On Friday, The Uttarakhand government has extended the term of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) committee by 15 days. Radha Raturi, Additional Chief Secretary Home, has issued orders in this regard. Now the draft report is likely to come by the second fortnight of February. The tenure of the committee was ending on Friday.
On Friday, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami made the announcement in Roorkee while addressing the Namo Nav Matdata Sammelan (New Voters Conference). The tenure of the committee has been extended for the fourth time. The term of the committee, headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, ended today, on January 26.
CM Dhami has also cancelled his trip to Ayodhya along with his cabinet and may call for a special session to table the bill in the Assembly. CM Pushkar Singh Dhami constituted a committee headed by retired judge Ranjana Prakash Desai to review and implement the Uniform Civil Code on 27 May 2022.
The CM said that divorce, live-in relationships, marriage registrations, polygamy, adoption, parents’ maintenance, women’s rights on property will all be a part of UCC in the state. On 27 September 2023, the committee was extended by four months. Meanwhile, the possibility of submitting a draft report to the government was being expressed by the committee.
