Gonda: In a swift response to a bank robbery in Gonda district, a man who looted Rs 8.54 lakh was arrested hours later following an encounter with the police. The suspect, who brandished a sharp weapon during the robbery at Prathama UP Gramin Bank, engaged in gunfire with police at a checkpoint. In self-defence, the police retaliated, shooting the suspect in the right leg. The wounded individual was subsequently taken to the district hospital for medical treatment.
Superintendent of Police Vineet Jaiswal revealed that, after the robbery, intensive investigations were initiated based on CCTV footage, leading to the formation of five police teams to track down the perpetrator. The SP, along with the DIG, personally inspected the crime scene, underscoring the authorities’ commitment to swift and effective action.
During a routine police check on Mokalpur Road, the suspect, identified as Rakesh Gupta, was flagged down. However, Gupta responded by opening fire at the police team, leading to the encounter. The successful operation resulted in the recovery of the motorcycle used in the incident, the sharp weapon (a sickle), and the entire looted amount of Rs 8.54 lakh from the suspect’s possession.
