Eight members, including three children of family attempt self-immolation in front of Karnataka assembly

Karnataka: On Wednesday, Eight members of a family tried to end their lives after they attempted to self-immolate themselves in front of the Karnataka Assembly in Bengaluru. Gathered outside the assembly, all eight members, including three children, tried to burn themselves by pouring kerosene.

However, the security personnel present at the spot stopped them and took them under their custody. According to police, the family members chose the desperate move as they were upset with a bank auctioning their house to recover loan dues.

Before trying to commit suicide, Shahista Banu and Munaid Ullah said they were not getting any help from the Housing Minister and other authorities. Video of the incident, doing rounds on social media, showed cops taking the family into police vehicles. They were seeking authorities’ intervention in a bank loan case.

Munaid Ullah had taken a loan of Rs 50 lakh from a co-operative bank in 2016. He had taken loan for ginger cultivation but instead of making a profit, he suffered a huge loss. However, their venture incurred significant losses, leaving them struggling to repay the borrowed amount.

Due to the family’s failure to repay the EMIs, the bank moved to auction their house to recover the dues, prompting the family to take the extreme step. The bank officials initiated the auction of the family’s residence, valued at Rs 3 crore, for a mere Rs 1.41 crore.

A case has been registered against the family under two sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 309 for attempted suicide and 990 for creating a public nuisance related to suicide. Before pouring kerosine on herself a woman of the family said,”I have come here to beg Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for justice. We have come to the streets, and I don’t have money to feed my child. Zameer Ahmed Khan promised us, but nothing happened.”
