Election commission to be named Rajkummar Rao as its National Icon ahead of upcoming polls

New Delhi: The Election commission body has declared that soon it would appoint actor Rajkummar Rao as its national icon, ahead of upcoming elections. A formal ceremony to bestow this honour upon the actor will be held on Thursday, October 26, as confirmed by the election commission of India.

The Election Commission notified that a formal ceremony, wherein Rajkummar will be announced as the ‘National Icon’, will be held on Thursday. This move comes ahead of the Assembly Polls which are set to be held in five states of the country next month. Over 161 million people in five states across India will vote in assembly elections next month, EC announced earlier this month.

In November, assembly elections will be held in five states — Mizoram (November 7), Madhya Pradesh (November 17), Chhattisgarh (November 7 and 17 — two phases), Rajasthan (November 23) and Telangana (November 30). The votes will be counted on 3 December.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar also said the polls in these states hold a distinct significance because they will act as the final assembly elections before the general elections in 2024.

Stree fame actor Rajkummar’s appointment as the National Icon is even more crucial as it comes on the heels of the general elections which will be held in 2024. The actor has been appointed by the EC in a bid to encourage citizens to exercise their right to vote and elect their ideal candidate during the elections.

On the professional work front, the actor has a number of films in the pipeline. He will be next seen in Mr and Mrs Mahi, in which he will be reuniting with his Roohi co-star Janhvi Kapoor. In the film, the two of them will reportedly be seen playing cricketers.

The release of the film is yet to be announced.
