Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stirred controversy by alleging that the Congress’s manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls is more aligned with election strategies in Pakistan rather than in India. In response, the Congress party has rebuffed Sarma’s accusations.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a scathing critique of the Congress party’s election manifesto, asserting that it promotes “politics of appeasement” rather than addressing the needs of the Indian electorate. Sarma’s remarks insinuated that the manifesto’s policies were better suited for Pakistan’s political landscape, alleging a divisive agenda aimed at securing power.
The Congress’s manifesto, released on Friday, emphasizes five ‘pillars of justice’ and outlines 25 guarantees, including promises such as a legal safeguard for Minimum Support Price (MSP) and a nationwide caste census. Sarma’s accusations labeled these initiatives as appeasement tactics rather than genuine efforts to address the nation’s challenges.
In response to Sarma’s criticisms, Congress spokesperson Bedabrata Bora dismissed the allegations as baseless and reiterated the party’s commitment to inclusivity and social justice. Bora underscored Sarma’s past defection to the BJP in 2015, suggesting a lack of understanding of the Congress’s principles.
As Assam prepares for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled to be held in three phases on April 19, April 26, and May 7, the political discourse intensifies with contrasting narratives from the ruling BJP and opposition Congress. Amidst the heated exchanges, the electorate awaits an informed decision come polling day, while both parties strive to sway public opinion in their favor.
