IMD issues orange alert for heavy rain in Himachal Pradesh today

Shimla: The Indian Meteorological Department predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in different parts of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday. The local meteorological department has issued an 'orange' alert for the state on Saturday. The Meteorological Department has also issued a 'yellow' alert for heavy rain at some places from July 23 to 25.

Shimla: The Indian Meteorological Department predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in different parts of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday. The local meteorological department has issued an ‘orange’ alert for the state on Saturday. The Meteorological Department has also issued a ‘yellow’ alert for heavy rain at some places from July 23 to 25.

According to the Meteorological Department, very heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places in Chamba, Kangra, Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Bilaspur, Solan and Sirmaur districts of the state on Saturday, while heavy rains may occur in Una, Hamirpur, Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur districts.

Light to heavy rain occurred in parts of Himachal Pradesh on Friday. Palampur recorded maximum rainfall of 147 millimeters (mm) in the last 24 hours till 5.30 pm, according to Met department data. After this, Dharamsala received 50 mm of rain, Manali 34 mm and Dalhousie 27 mm.

According to the Himachal Pradesh State Emergency Response Centre, 138 people have died in rain-related incidents like landslides, floods and road accidents since the onset of monsoon in the state on June 24. Besides this, the state has suffered a loss of Rs 4,986 crore.

A total of 586 houses were completely and 5,030 partially damaged in the rain-related incidents. The damaged properties also include 234 shops and 1500 cow shelters. Around 605 roads are still closed in the state. Officials said a team sent by the Center is visiting rain-affected areas in the state to assess the damage.
