A Jammu and Kashmir student, Sohrab Qayoom, enrolled at Rajasthan’s Mewar University, has been arrested and expelled after posting an objectionable comment on social media. The Chittorgarh police filed an FIR against Qayoom, charging him under IPC sections 153A and 295A. The university’s Director, Harish Gurnani, confirmed Qayoom’s expulsion and initiation of possible punishments.

The Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association (JKSA) strongly condemned Qayoom’s actions, attributing them to immaturity and a lack of political awareness. The association urged leniency, emphasizing the potential severe consequences on his academic and future prospects.

In a statement, JKSA national convenor Nasir Khuehami condemned Qayoom’s actions, stressing the need for Kashmiri students to refrain from provocative social media content. Qayoom, enrolled under the Indian Army’s Special Scholarship Scheme, faces potential damage to his future due to the charges. Khuehami requested a fair and just approach, advocating for a chance at rehabilitation and the dropping of the FIR on humanitarian grounds. The association emphasized the importance of a democratic and civilized society while acknowledging the need for accountability.
