Manipur : In response to recent violent incidents, the Manipur government has extended the suspension of mobile internet services in a 2 km border stretch across nine districts for an additional 15 days. The decision comes in the wake of attacks on security personnel and civilians, prompting authorities to address the prevailing law and order situation.
The extension follows incidents such as attacks on Manipur police commandos and a Border Security Force (BSF) trooper in Moreh, Tengnoupal district, where 10 security personnel were injured. On New Year’s Day, armed assailants killed four individuals and injured 14 others in Thoubal district.
Affected Districts:
Chandel
Kakching
Churachandpur
Bisnupur
Kangpokpi
Imphal West
Thoubal
Tengnoupal
Imphal East
Mobile internet services were initially banned in Manipur around eight months ago due to ethnic violence between non-tribal Meitei and tribal Kuki-Zo communities on May 3, 2023. Although a partial lift of the ban occurred on December 3, 2023, in major parts of the state, the restriction persisted in the border areas of the nine mentioned districts. The government has consistently extended the ban in five-day intervals amid ongoing security concerns.
