Mayawati expressed her party’s willingness to consider forming post-poll alliances in the upcoming elections in four states

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati has maintained an equal distance from both the INDIA and NDA coalitions. She recently stated that a decision on joining either bloc will be made after the upcoming Assembly elections in four states. The states heading to polls later this year are Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Mizoram, while the Lok Sabha elections are scheduled for 2024.

Mayawati emphasized the importance of a coalition government that prioritizes the welfare of marginalized sections and Muslims (janhit ki majboor sarkar) rather than a strong and arrogant government. She believes such a coalition would be beneficial for the marginalized communities.

The BSP leader accused “anti-BSP and casteist elements” of trying to break away her party MLAs using various tactics for their desire for power, which has affected the BSP movement.

Earlier, Mayawati had announced that the BSP would contest the upcoming Assembly polls independently without forming any alliances with other parties. She highlighted that the intentions and policies of both the BJP and Congress-led alliances have been similar concerning the interests of Dalits, tribals, and marginalized groups.

However, a BSP leader stated that Mayawati’s recent statement indicates the party’s willingness to join any of the fronts, and such a decision could pave the way for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Regarding the question of which coalition (NDA or INDIA) the BSP is likely to join, the party leader clarified that they are not discussing any specific party at the moment. The final decision will be made based on the BSP’s positioning as a “balance of power” after the elections.
