Mumbai: 18-year-old boy dies by suicide after losing Rs 2 lakh to cyber fraud

Mumbai: The police said that a 18-year-old boy committed suicide at Nalasopara after losing Rs 2 lakh in a cyber fraud incident while playing an online game. The police said that he accidentally clicked on an unsafe link, due to which fraudsters withdrew money from his account. After the loss, the victim committed suicide at home.

The deceased was identified as Gaurav Roy. He was a resident of Om JDS Colony at Dhaniv Baug, Nalasopara East. He lived with his parents and 15-year-old brother and was a student of Standard 11. Police said he was playing a game on his mother’s phone when the money was deducted from his account.

According to police officials, the incident took place on Wednesday afternoon when Roy was playing a game. While playing the online game, he got a link that promised extra points for playing further games. Gaurav clicked on the link to earn points.

About this incident, a police official said, “When Gaurav clicked on the link in the game, a page opened and an OTP was generated. After entering the OTP, the mobile phone was mirrored and hacked. The fraudster allegedly transferred Rs 2 lakh from the phone linked to the bank.”

Panic over the withdrawal of money from his mother’s account, Gaurav consumed poison and committed suicide. His family members rushed him to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. After the incident, Pelhar police registered a case under ADR and handed over the investigation to Achole police for further investigation.
