A flash flood hit the Teesta River in the Lachen valley of North Sikkim due to a cloud burst, causing the water level to rise by several feet within a few minutes. Army vehicles deployed near Bardang in Singtam were submerged due to a rapid rise in the water level, resulting in 23 Army personnel goes missing.

Gangtok: In a devastating turn of events, Twenty-three Army soldiers are missing after a cloudburst in Sikkim caused flash floods in the Teesta river. The army has said that a massive search has been launched to trace the missing soldiers. The flood, which was the result of intense rainfall, caused significant damage as it flowed into a valley in the area. It is one of the worst floods to hit the region in recent years, causing widespread concern over the well-being of missing workers.

The army has started relief and rescue operations to search for the missing soldiers. The main reason for floods in Teesta river is being said to be the release of water from Chungthang Dam.

According to sources related to the army, release of water from the Chungthang dam led to a sudden increase in water level up to 15-20 feet high downstream, many army vehicles came under its influence. It is being told that the water level of Teesta river has increased by 15 to 20 feet in a few minutes. Because of this, army vehicles came under his influence.

Impact of flood
The flash flood strikes Teesta River in the Lachen valley of North Sikkim as a result of a cloudburst over Lhonak Lake. Several military installations in the area have been affected, with efforts underway to ascertain the full extent of the damage. The release of water from the Chungthang dam triggered a rapid efflux in water levels, reaching heights of up to 15-20 feet. The army vehicles stationed near Singtam, particularly at Bardang, bore the brunt of this deluge.

As a response to the situation, intensive search and rescue operations are currently in progress to locate and aid the missing individuals and to assess the overall situation. Reports suggest that 41 vehicles have been reported submerged under the slush.

The Sikkim government flags a red high alert in the state. Videos recorded and shared by local residents show roads washed away and the river in spate. The sudden release of water from the Chungthang dam led to the increase in water level, affecting the army vehicles parked at Bardang. The local administration has advised people living on the banks of the Teesta river to evacuate their homes to ensure their safety.

“Nobody sustains injury but flood has caused significant damage to public property. Some people have also been reported missing in Singtam. Relief operations are on,” said Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said during a visit to an affected area.
