Sikkim: HM Amit Shah approves release of Rs 44.8 cr to provide relief to flood-hit people

Sikkim: The death toll due to flash floods in Sikkim has reached 21 and search is on for 103 missing people. Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah has approved the release of Rs 44.8 crore to provide relief to the flood affected people. This assistance will be released to Sikkim as advance from the central share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

Sikkim: The death toll due to flash floods in Sikkim has reached 21 and search is on for 103 missing people. Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah has approved the release of Rs 44.8 crore to provide relief to the flood affected people. This assistance will be released to Sikkim as advance from the central share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

With this, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has constituted an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) to assess the damage caused due to the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) which has led to increased flow in the Teesta river. Flash flood in Sikkim on 4 October.

Amit Shah has approved the release of both the installments of the central share of SDRF, amounting to Rs 44.8 crore, to Sikkim, according to an official statement. It is noteworthy that the Center has assured all possible help to the Sikkim government.

The statement said that the Central Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi stands shoulder to shoulder with Sikkim. Based on the assessment of the IMCT, additional central assistance will be sanctioned from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) for Sikkim as per the prescribed procedure.

The Center is providing full assistance to the Government of Sikkim by mobilizing timely logistics resources to complete the efforts to deal effectively with the situation. The logistics support provided includes deployment of adequate teams of NDRF, Indian Air Force helicopters and Army personnel along with necessary search and rescue equipment.

Additionally,the statement said that technical teams from the ministries of power, telecom and road, highways and transport are assisting for timely restoration of damaged infrastructure and communication networks in the state.
