Srinagar: On Tuesday, At least four people were killed after a carrying them overturned in the Jhelum River near Srinagar on Tuesday. According to the information, three others went missing in this incident. Authorities have launched a rescue operation at the spot and efforts are on to locate the persons who are feared missing.
As many as 12 people have been rescued from the river so far. The boat was mostly carrying school children and a few locals. The students were being ferried from Gandbal to Batwara in Srinagar when the accident occurred.
The incident took place near Batwara district of Srinagar. Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management officials said that police and the STtae Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed at the site to carry out the rescue operation.
Heavy rains have been lashing the Kashmir Valley for the last 72 hours leading to the Jehlum River flowing close to the danger mark. Incessant rains over the last couple of days have led to an increase in the water levels of several water bodies, including Jhelum.
Earlier, fresh snowfall occurred in Sonamarg in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday evening. Roofs and roads of tourist resorts in Sonamarg were covered with a layer of snow. Meanwhile, rain occurred in Kishtwar district and surrounding areas on Tuesday.
