Their protest was underscored by a poignant symbol – skulls and bones, representing farmers who tragically took their own lives due to financial distress.

The heart of the farmers’ outcry revolves around the government’s purported failure to fulfill promises made regarding crop price hikes and the ambitious interlinking of rivers project. Ayyakannu, the president of the National South Indian River Interlinking Farmers Association, highlighted the stark disparity between assurances and actions, citing unmet commitments despite pledges to double agricultural income.

Expressing their frustration, the farmers warned of a potential electoral challenge in Varanasi if their demands continue to fall on deaf ears. This threat underscores their desperation for attention to their plight, as they assert their non-partisan stance and emphasize their need for assistance, irrespective of political affiliations.

Facing initial resistance to their protests, the farmers secured legal permission to demonstrate, asserting their fundamental right to voice dissent in a democratic society. Their persistence in seeking redress for their grievances echoes through their repeated gatherings at Jantar Mantar, marking a continued call for attention to the struggles of Tamil Nadu’s agricultural community.
