West Bengal: ED custody of TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan extended till April 13 in Sandeshkhali Case

West Bengal: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody of suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shahjahan Sheikh has been extended till April 13 in the Sandeshkhali ED assault case by a sessions court in Kolkata.

The ED on Monday, presented Sheikh Shahjahan in the Kolkata Sessions Court. Earlier, the probe agency questioned Sheikh regarding his involvement in a land grab case. The investigation revealed illicit financial transactions in the shrimp import-export business. Consequently, the ED lodged two Enforcement Case Information Reports (ECIR) against him.

One ECIR was linked to alleged ration (PDS) corruption, originating from a letter by Jyotiprioryo Mallik, the former Bengal food minister while the other focused on unlawful activities in export-import transactions, including allegations of forced land acquisition. This ECIR has allegations of forcible land acquisition.

Earlier, the suspended TMC leader was sent to judicial custody in the Sandeshkhali Enforcement Directorate assault case. The central agency interrogated Shahjahan at the Basirhat Sub Correctional Home in North 24 Parganas district Before that, on the directive of the Calcutta High Court, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Kolkata Police handed custody of Sheikh to the CBI.

Shahjahan was first arrested by the Basirhat district police in February on charges of planning and orchestrating the attack on ED and CAPF teams on January 5. Last week, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Agnimitra Paul said that Sheikh will definitely be punished for his actions but “what punishment will be given to West Bengal Chief Minister” Mamata Banerjee as she was aware of the acts being committed by TMC leader in Sandeshkhali.
