A 63-year-old Mumbai resident fell victim to a sophisticated cyber scam, losing Rs 3 lakh to an unknown fraudster who exploited the WhatsApp platform, Mumbai police revealed on Wednesday.
In Mumbai, a 63-year-old person got tricked and lost Rs 3 lakh to a scammer using WhatsApp, the police said on Wednesday.
The scam happened on March 2. The victim got a call on WhatsApp from someone pretending to be their son’s friend from Canada. The scammer copied the son’s voice and said they were in trouble and needed money.
Thinking it was their son’s friend, the victim sent Rs 2 lakh to the scammer’s account. They also asked two friends to send Rs 50,000 each.
When the scammer asked for more money, the victim got suspicious and tried to video call them. But the scammer didn’t answer. Later, the victim found out that their son’s friend never made such a call.
The victim filed a complaint online on March 3, but because they were sick, they couldn’t go to the police station that day. They went on Monday to register the case.
The police are investigating the case to catch the scammer. This shows how important it is to be careful with online scams, especially for older people.
