A Large-Scale Search and Rescue Operation Underway in Northeastern State Following Cloudburst-Induced Flash Floods in North Sikkim
Sikkim: The death toll due to flash floods in Sikkim has reached 21 and search is on for 103 missing people. Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah has approved the release of Rs 44.8 crore to provide relief to the flood affected people. This assistance will be released to Sikkim as advance from the central share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
Sikmim: According to the latest informatiom released by the Sikkim government, 14 people have died so far and 102 people are still missing after Teesta River has been wreaked after a flash flood due to cloudburst and dam failure on Lhonak Lake. According to the data, 22,034 people in Sikkim have been affected due to this flood. At the same time, so far 2011 people have been saved.
A flash flood hit the Teesta River in the Lachen valley of North Sikkim due to a cloud burst, causing the water level to rise by several feet within a few minutes. Army vehicles deployed near Bardang in Singtam were submerged due to a rapid rise in the water level, resulting in 23 Army personnel goes missing.
Among the foreign tourists stranded due to North Sikkim floods, 23 are from Bangladesh, 10 from America and three from Singapore. Along with this, officials said that 345 cars and 11 motorbikes are stuck at various places in North Sikkim.
Sikkim Nathu La Avalanche: There has been a huge avalanche in Nathu La, Sikkim, in which 6 tourists have died and many people are feared trapped.
According to the Meteorological Department, Delhi NCR will remain cloudy today and many areas will experience light to moderate rains. However, the level of rain today will be less than Saturday. The sun may also bloom for some time in between.
New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department forecast predicts moderate to heavy rain is expected in Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Sikkim and Bihar today and tomorrow i.e. 30-31 March. Today, hailstorm may also occur in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, due to which farmers may have to suffer loss of wheat crop along with other crops.
According to the Meteorological Department (IMD), there may be light to moderate rain and snowfall in Ladakh, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh during the next 24 hours. Apart from this, there is a possibility of light rain in Assam, Jammu, Sikkim and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The temperature of the weather is increasing rapidly in North India. According to private weather agency Skymet, during the last 24 hours, the maximum temperature was 5 degrees or more than normal at most places in Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat region. According to the Weather Update, light rain may occur in Meghalaya, Assam, Nagaland and Sikkim in the next 3-4 days.
